Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple is the principal ancient Shiva temple of Puducherry, representing the bedrock of the town's Vedic heritage. Ancient scriptures and oral tradition recount that Sage Agastya established a revered Vedic learning academy (Vedapuri) in this very precinct, lending the region its ancient spiritual identity before the modern French town emerged. The presiding deity, Lord Vedapureeswarar, is worshipped as a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Lingam facing east. Adjacent to the main sanctum is the shrine of Goddess Tiripurasundari facing south, embodying divine grace, maternal protection, and universal peace.
